Rolex Daytona: The Mystique of an Icon

Jewelry is worn to reflect an individual’s passion and status, with this in mind there is no better representative of both a passion for cars or status symbol than the Rolex Daytona.

Founded in 1905 by Hans Wilsdorf and Alfred Davis Rolex has become one of the world’s most sought after luxury brands.
Rolex was making chronographs since the 30’s and in 1935 British “Daredevil” (the term used to describe those who challenged speed records both on land and air) clocked his automobile at 300 mph setting a new world’s record and praising his Rolex Chronograph for keeping accurate time.
Throughout the decades Rolex aligned itself with many sports events including the 24 Hour Lemans Automotive Race held in France where it has been the official race timekeeper for over 70 years.

Fittingly in 1992 Rolex became the official time keeper of the 24 Hour Daytona Race for whom their Daytona was named. A fitting combination that represents both the precision and overall endurance of both cars and drivers, man and machine. Among race enthusiasts that equipped themselves with this timepiece was the late Paul Newman. Today, the particular model, presented to him in 1972 by his wife Joanne Woodward, is fondly described as the “Paul Newman Daytona”. It is one of the most coveted items among fine time piece collectors.
Upon it’s debut in 1962 The Rolex Daytona’s movement was a hand wound Valjoux movement. To keep up with demand from 1988 to 2000 Rolex relied on Swiss watch chrono movement inventor Zenith to supply the Daytona with their famous “El Primero” movements. In 2000 Rolex unveiled and began to use their own “in-house” 4130 certified chronometer movement in the Rolex Daytona series. Today’s watch enthusiasts prize both the old Zenith manufactured movements and the first (Circa 2000) watches with the new 4130 movements.
